Year 2
In Year 2 we are a class family, always working as a team and taking care of one another, truly embodying our school mission to ‘Serve with Love and Strive for Excellence’. As a family and school community, we are dedicated to help and support all children, enabling them to flourish, grow and succeed, in their own individual ways.
Attendance and punctuality are extremely important to us, being key to both academic and social development. We set high expectations from the start of the day with our doors open, a smile on our faces and learning tasks at the ready at 8:45am. This is an essential part of your child’s learning, as it prepares the children in readiness for the day’s learning ahead.
In Year 2, the children will value themselves and others and we will always work as a team. We will aim to achieve our potential by using our core values, being Ready, Respectful, and Kind. We will rise to the challenges of Year 2, embracing them and asking questions to deepen our understanding. We will develop a growth mindset, knowing it is ok to make mistakes; always learning from them, bouncing back and trying again. We have an ‘I can’ attitude to our learning and use our resilience and determination to achieve our goals. In Year 2, we promote all children taking pride in their work and presentation of their achievements in lessons.
In English, we will study a variety of traditional tales which our children may already be familiar with, along with some ‘twisted’ versions of stories such as ‘The Frog Prince Continued’. Additionally, we will be looking at some classic texts such as Roald Dahl, Fantastic Mr. Fox. There will of course be some modern texts that we will explore too including The Lonely Beast and Mr. Bunny’s Chocolate Factory. Throughout Year 2, we will make strong cross-curricular links within our English topics to the wider curriculum, exploring fiction and non-fiction stories that link to the Great Fire of London, and Travel and Transportation within our humanities’ subjects.
In Mathematics we will continue to follow the Maths No Problem programme, ensuring we use plenty of concrete manipulatives to support our learning of Number, Shape, Measurement and Statistics to improve our numeracy and problem-solving skills relating them to real-life situations. We embed previously taught skills with the Mastery in Number programme.
Additionally, the children will continue to have a rich and varied curriculum through weekly sessions of Religious Education, Music, Science, History, Geography, Computing, PSHE and PE (athletics, dance, swimming and gymnastics), as well as half-termly Art and Design Technology topics.
Class Routines
Remember our GOLDEN rule is to Read! Read! Read! All children must bring their reading book into school every day and show that they have read at least 3 times a week! Weekly spelling homework will be set on a Friday and must be returned by the following Friday. Don’t forget to log on to TT Rockstars and Spelling Shed as much as possible. Each term, the children will also receive a longer, project piece of homework linked to one of the current (history, geography or science) topics to explore in greater depth at home together over several weeks. PE day changes each term- so please keep an eye out on Class Dojo for updates.
In Year 2 we are passionate about what we do. We believe that strong relationships with our parents and carers helps to build the foundations upon which your child thrives!
Remember to keep an eye on Class Dojo for regular updates of your child’s learning journey!
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact any of the Year 2 team.
